About the listing
Peterborough House sits directly across from the Curdies River inlet to Peterborough Main Beach and Newfields Beach, along a pristine and unpopulated stretch of sand & sea that provides the perfect morning or sunset stroll. There are also idyllic swimming spots within minutes of the property and stunning walking trails and coves to explore. We are also lucky enough to be on the doorstep of the Bay of Islands Coastal Park and a short drive from the 12 Apostles! Great place to stay if you want to taste your way along the 12 Apostles Food Trail.
The land on which Peterborough House is located holds some history within the local community.
The first building on our site was a large timber cottage guest house named Peterborough House constructed in 1886 by James Irvine, a local pioneer. By 1887 Peterborough House was already receiving high acclaim for its accommodation and hospitality.
By the mid-1890s, Peterborough House was hosting numerous large social events including concerts, balls, aid benefits, prominent birthday parties and sports days.
The name was subsequently changed to the Peterborough Hotel which sadly burnt down in 1965. Replacing the charred remains of Peterborough House was the first chapter of the Peterborough Motel. This remained the only motel in Peterborough for many years and was purchased by the Turnbull Family in 2010. The property has undergone a major refurbishment, capturing the relaxed seaside feel of the town, while making the rooms modern and comfortable. It has been used in recent years as a Wedding venue, corporate training facility and was only made available to large groups wanting to occupy the entire property.
The latest chapter in the story of Peterborough House is that we now have Andrew & Rhoda living onsite with their children and have reopened the property to welcome visitors again in a traditional Motel setting.
